Kate Scherfenberg

I love using my hands. The feeling of my hands in clay takes away the stresses of the world. I dissolve into the present and focus on making things. Making shapes and surfaces that I see in my head is deeply satisfying. Sometimes the clay decides where things should go and it is humbling and enjoyable when I relax my control. These objects will hopefully be used to bring people into the ‘presence’ of their own lives. Being ‘in the moment’ is my fondest wish for the user of my handmade pots. I want my pottery to add to the moment of enjoying a cup of coffee, a salad, or a plate of cookies. I hope it will become part of the art of everyday living.

My pottery is wheel thrown and hand built earthenware with slip brush work and sgraffito. While it is inspired by my life, surroundings, and the natural environment around me, it is done in a way that focuses less on realistic interpretation and more on sentiment and playfulness. I hope my pottery is enjoyable to use.
