George Lowe

I remember when I was young, maybe 10 years old, seeing for the first time, a potter shape a bowl on the potter’s wheel. Somehow becoming a potter and making cups and bowls out of clay became my life’s work. Seven years after my first pottery class I received an MFA in ceramic art which enabled me to teach over 20 years at the college level. Teaching for me was just a continuation of my education. Early on I became focused on the technique of wood firing. That process with the directional flame and ash deposits can reveal a lot about the shaping and texture of a piece.  Since 1994, I have operated “Lowe Pottery” ,  producing unique handmade stoneware. I make a wide variety of cups, bowls, vases, and jars meant to be useful. I carve or press textures and layer glazes and fire in a small gas reduction kiln. My glazes are inspired by the effects of wood firing. I want my work to be craft and art at the same time.  What I look for in my work is for it to be well balanced, well crafted, with a sense of movement and gesture, a sense of being relaxed, to be present and timeless and to exude the  spirit and energy of the maker.
