Extra Hot Earthenware: Forming and Firing Techniques

Join one of the 2016 NCECA emerging artists, Tom Jaszczak, and his wife, Maggie Finlayson, as they present the ins and outs of mid-range earthenware.

On Saturday, June 11 from 9am - 3pm Tom and Maggie will present a variety of methods for experimentation including creating individual bisque molds, using drape molds, altering on the wheel, adding coil-built features, developing handles, and trimming wheel thrown pots off the wheel. Tom and Maggie will share information about effective decorating techniques that can be used at any temperature range.

Additionally, on Saturday from 3 - 6pm eight participants can stay on for an experimental cone 3 soda firing!  Glazing will begin at 3pm Saturday afternoon and continue into the early evening with kiln loading. Plan to fill one 12" x 24" shelf with pots made from a clay rated to at least cone 3 (Continental Clay’s low fire red earthenware is recommended).  Work should be bisqued prior to the workshop, but glazes and slips will be included in your workshop fee.

On Sunday, June 12th, the workshop will consist of firing the soda kiln with both Tom Jaszczak and Donovan Palmquist of Master Kiln Builders. This will be an incredible opportunity to join two of the field’s accomplished firers as they push the boundaries of earthenware in this experimental soda firing. While firing, there will be flexible time for additional demonstrations, discussions, and a potluck prior to wrapping up the soda firing around 6pm. The kiln opening will take place Tuesday evening, June 14th.

Skill level: intermediate to advanced

Workshop Fees:

  • Saturday workshop only is $75
  • Saturday workshop and Sunday firing is $125
