Throughout my 35 years of working in clay, I have always incorporated humor into the pieces I make. I enjoy cartoons, lots of color, giving human qualities and power to animals, and just plain fun things. I’ve studied a lot of drawing and painting over the years, and want to breathe life into the animals I create, surprise the viewer, and stretch the limits of the medium.
My work is wheel-thrown or hand-built from rolled slabs using white earthenware clay. I add clay details, then bisque fire the pieces. I start to draw and paint using underglazes and a fine brush, finishing up with the final black-line detail and pattern-work that I enjoy doing. A final firing with a clear glaze intensifies the colors.
